Dokumentarfilm fra 2021 om Omar Blondin Diop og en hyllest til Godard

Filmen er del av en serie kuratert av Hanan Benammar og Brynjar Bjerkem for kunstprodusenten Transcultural Arts Production (TrAP) og vises på cinematekene i Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen og Tromsø, samt ved Arctic Moving Image & Film Festival i Harstad.

OM JUST A MOVEMENT

Omar Blondin Diop var en aktivistist og filosofistudent i Nanterre, Frankrike, da han i 1967 spilte seg selv i Jean - Luc Godards "La chinoise". Hans opptreden i den filmen gir de eneste rørende bildene av Diop i dette intellektuelt stimulerende portrettet av en mann som strever etter en permanent revolusjonstilstand i en tumultarisk tid som vrimlet av politiske bevegelser.

Diops venner og brødre – filmet i profil og i minimalt, malerisk lys – minner om hans dype engasjement i studentprotestene i mai 1968 og hans motstand i Senegal mot det franskstøttede regimet til Léopold Sédar Senghor. Å blande intervjuene med arkivopptak og fragmenter fra «La chinoise» skaper en kompleks konstruksjon av flerlagsbilder. Dette er altså også en film om de stilistiske komponentene som brukes til å fortelle en historie - i dette tilfellet historien om en som kan ikke lenger fortelle det selv, fordi Diop døde i 1973 i et senegalesisk fengsel.

Til syvende og sist forklarer ikke «Just a Movement» hvem Omar Blondin Diop var så mye som å presentere måtene han lever på: i historiene og minnene til brødrene hans, i Godards film og i dagens ungdomsbevegelser i Senegal

TIDLØS REISE

Hvordan kan film bidra til å identifisere fordeling av økonomisk makt over tid og bidra til nytenkning om egen samtid? Det er utgangspunktet for denne serien, som består av fire afrikansk-forankrede filmer laget over et spenn på femti år.

I 1965 begynner den mauritanske filmskaperen Med Hondo med egne midler på Soleil ô, filmen som fire år senere skal bli hans spillefilmdebut. Filmen regnes i dag som en av de viktigste og samtidig tidligste afrikanske filmene. Filmen er et sterkt politisk bilde av den vanskelige tilværelsen til afrikanske lavtlønnede arbeidere i 60-tallets Paris.

AKTIVISTEN OMAR BLONDIN DIOP

I samme tidsrom begynner de venstre-politiske protestene ved de franske universi­tetene. Jean-Luc Godard drar i 1967 til universitetet i Nanterre for å observere aksjonene, ledet av legenden Daniel Cohn-Bendit. I Nanterre møter Godard den senegalesiske aktivisten Omar Blondin Diop. Godards erfaringer blir til spillefilmen La chinoise, hvor Diop inviteres til å være med. Som den eneste karakteren i filmen spiller han seg selv: som lederskikkelse i studentbevegelsen.

Diop blir senere utvist fra universitetet, men fortsetter sitt engasjement, ikke minst i hjemlandet Sénégal. I 1973 blir han arrestert for å ha planlagt kidnappingen av en fransk ambassadør og fengslet på fangeøya Gorée, og så drept. Vi viser Vincent Meessens film Just a Movement (2021) om Omar Blondin Diop. Filmen er en fri gjenskapelse av La chinoise, her med Dakar som åsted.

KINESISKE STEMMER

Hos Godard og i Just a Movement er den kinesiske stemmen (la chinoise) det røde budskapet, i form av Maos lille røde bok. I angolske Ery Clavers spillefilm Our Lady of the Chinese Shop (2022) er den kinesiske poetiske fortellerstemmen en observatør, som ser et samfunn i uro og hvordan en ny stormakt, Kina, kontinuerlig er til stede. Filmens karakterer bærer uroen i seg, men er usikre på om de vil og hvordan de kan ta kampen. Det hele nabolaget har til felles, er at de eier et eksemplar av samme religiøse fetisjen; Jomfru Maria-statuen Our Lady of the Cross (altså ikke Maos lille røde), solgt i stort omfang av innehaveren av det lokale kinesiske supermarkedet borte i gata.

ARVEN FRA KOLONIALISMEN

Serien fullføres av Alice Diops dokumentarfilm On Call (2016), som er et vitnesbyrd om situasjonen for mange flyktninger og arbeidsinnvandrere i dagens Frankrike, femti år etter Med Hondos Soleil ô. Filmen ble spilt inn over et halvt år ved et legekontor i en av Paris forsteder, hvor nyankomne migranter tilbys gratis helsehjelp. I forkant hadde Diop vært på stedet i et år som observatør. Filmen gir et klart bilde av vår tids stadig mer umenneskelige behandling av migranter, og traumene de lider under.

Arven fra kolonialismen er en av seriens to «røde tråder». Den andre er spørsmålet om hva film er i denne sammenhengen? Filmene i serien problematiserer sin egen samtid, samtidig som de gjennom formbevissthet eksperimenterer med mediet for å kunne utforske samtidige og hegemoniske maktforhold på best mulig måte.

The film is part of a series curated by Hanan Benammar and Brynjar Bjerkem for the art producer Transcultural Arts Production (TrAP) and will be shown in cinemas in Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen and Tromsø, as well as at the Arctic Moving Image & Film Festival in Harstad.

ABOUT JUST A MOVEMENT

Omar Blondin Diop was an activist philosophy student in Nanterre, France, when in 1967 he played himself in Jean - Luc Godard’s "La chinoise". His appearance in that film provides the only moving images of Diop in this intellectually stimulating portrait of a man striving for a permanent state of revolution in a tumultuous time that was teeming with political movements.

Diop’s friends and brothers—filmed in profile and in minimal, painterly light —recall his deep involvement in the student protests of May 1968 and his resistance in Senegal against the French- backed regime of Léopold Sédar Senghor. Interspersing the interviews with archive footage and fragments from "La chinoise" creates a complex construction of multilayered imagery. This is, then, also a film about the stylistic components used to tell a story — in this case the story of someone who can no longer tell it himself, because Diop died in 1973 in a Senegalese prison.

Ultimately, "Just a Movement" doesn’t so much explain who Omar Blondin Diop was as much as present the ways in which he lives on: in the stories and memories of his brothers, in Godard’s film, and in today’s youth movements in Senegal

During ARCTIC MOVING IMAGE & FILM FESTIVAL 2023, SASUSU Radio invites to the exhibition "Verdens ende" (“The end of the world”). SASUSU Radio is a project-based artist collective consisting of Henrik Sørlid, Ellen Vikström, Mimii, Jette Graaner and Sanjey Sureshkumar.

The group works with a temple as a meeting place, a place for healing and mythology. With “The end of the world” as a direct thread between the time we live in and the end of the world, the artist group wants to create dialogue in Harstad. With a programme consisting of cooking and tea-drinking, radio programmes, music and performance, together with guests in and outside Harstad, SASUSU Radio welcomes you to life at The end of the world.

A little more about the artist collective SASUSU Radio:

SASUSU Radio is a migrant meeting place that has since 2021 searched for connections between the Eelam-Tamil island landscape and the Tamil diaspora in Norway. In the reincarnation of Eelam-Tamil culture created by encounters with and between peoples, place relations and migratory revivals, older traditions are presented in new refuges, and new traditions in older haunts. The radio's expression is channeled through collaboration and family ties that take place over time and in various works. The projects are fleeting and limitless and are shaped in the presence, where human coexistence highlights our everyday life and we who are part of it. Between physical and common points of reference, the radio tries to take root in the contexts that exist and are rooted in society, past and future.

In a suite at the hotel Clarion Arcticus Harstad, Suspended in Celluloid presents two works dealing with questions around yearning and ghostliness, social-psychological phenomena, and the affective impacts of technology. Beth von Undall’s Jailbreak Brenna 0.1 (2023) is a video game based on the game-theoretical premise ‘the prisoner’s dilemma’, featuring the underground Berlin-persona Brenna O. In the exhibition, viewers are invited to lay down on the hotel bed and decide on whether they want to conspire with or betray this alluring figure. On the grand room’s other screen, Sue de Beer’s The Ghosts (2011) similarly includes figures from the artists’ own circle: in this film painter Jutta Koether appears in the role of a hypnotist, whose powers lead distressed clients into dream-like states of confusion and hallucination. Within the walls of the hotel room’s decades-old interiors, the longing and desire emanating from both works seems to be suspended in the air.

I år er det 10 år siden den første Frost-filmen kom, og vi feirer med et skikkelig Frost-party på filmfestivalen AMIFF på Harstad Kino, for barn i alle aldre.

Filmen feirer at vi alle er forskjellige og at det er viktig å akseptere at vi alle er unike. Ingen er perfekte og alle har egenskaper som gjør dem spesielle, så det er viktig å huske å ikke skjule de fine egenskapene som gjør deg til den du er. På denne måten passer filmen perfekt inn i årets tema til AMIFF, BEND IT, MAYBE, som er tenkt som en åpen og løsningsorientert oppfordring til betraktninger rundt relasjonelle temaer, med fokus på identitet og tilhørighet.

I tillegg er jo filmen satt i et miljø som kan minne ganske mye om Norge og Arktis. Det er et reinsdyr i filmen, og en av karakterene Kristoffer er basert på en samisk mann. Likevel, det var ikke før i Frost II at det samiske miljøet ble invitert med av Disney til å si sin mening om hvordan de samiske elementene i filmen skulle stå fram.

Om filmen:

Når en trolldom forhekser et kongedømme til evig vinter, bestemmer den uredde optimisten Anna, seg for å legge ut på en episk reise for å finne sin søster Elsa, Snødronningen og sette en stopper for hennes iskalde forbannelse. Med seg på reisen har hun den erfarne fjellfareren Kristoffer og hans gode venn, reinsdyret Svein. På reisen gjennom dal og over fjell i ett landskap som minner om Norge, møter de mystiske troll og en fantastisk morsom snømann som heter Olaf. Det er magiske tilstander på hver en fjelltopp og de må sammen kjempe mot de iskalde elementene for å redde kongeriket fra evig forbannelse.

This year marks the 10 years anniversery of the first Frost film, and we are celebrating with a Frost party for children and children at heart at the AMIFF film festival at Harstad Kino. The film celebrates that we are all different and that it is important to accept that we are all unique. No one is perfect and everyone has qualities that make them special. Therefore, the film fits into this year's theme of AMIFF, BEND IT, MAYBE, which is intended as an open and solution-oriented call for considerations around relational themes, with a focus on identity and belonging.

In addition, the film is set in an environment that can be reminiscent of the Arctic. There is a reindeer in the film, and one of the characters Kristoffer is based on a Sami man. Nevertheless, it was not until Frost II that the Sami community was invited by Disney to give their opinion on how the Sami elements in the film should be presented.

About the movie:

When a spell enchants a kingdom into eternal winter, fearless optimist Anna decides to embark on an epic journey to find her sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy curse. She has with her on the journey the experienced mountaineer Kristoffer and his good friend, the reindeer Svein. On their journey through valleys and over mountains in a landscape reminiscent of Norway, they meet mysterious trolls and a wonderfully funny snowman called Olaf. There are magical conditions on every mountain peak and together they must fight against the icy elements to save the kingdom from eternal damnation.

SKREKKFILM FRA GRØNLAND

For første gang er Grønland med i konkurransen om å bli kåret til å vinne Nordisk råds filmpris. Nå har du den unike sjansen til å se den grønlandske filmen som er nominert.

Her er grunnen Nordisk råd har gitt for å nominere denne filmen:

“Med sin unike evne til å bygge på inuittiske fortellinger og mytologi kombinerer regissøren i Alanngut Killinganni (The Edge of the Shadows) moderne fortellerteknikk med humor og grøss fra den muntlige grønlandske fortellertradisjonen. Et av filmens sentrale elementer er altså dens bruk av grønlandske fortellinger og mytologi, som er vevd inn i historien på en naturlig og autentisk måte.

De grønlandske landskapene inngår også som et sentralt element i filmen, der betagende utsikter over fjellene og havet danner en fantastisk kulisse for handlingen. De vakre landskapene forsterker en følelse av frykt og uro og tilføyer en ekstra dimensjon til den spennende handlingen.

Filmen utforsker viktige temaer relatert til sorg, fellesskap og tradisjon. Det ses i sammenstøtet mellom sivilisasjoner, by og land, og det naturlige og det mystiske samt i respekten for natur og historie. Det finnes ting der ute som vi ikke kjenner til. Filmen plasserer seg elegant i den nyere tradisjonen med “arctic chills” fra det høye nord.”

OM FILMEN:

Åtte år har gått siden seks ungdommer ble angrepet av en Qivittoq (en grønlandsk sagnfigur). Tuuma er turistguide på Grønland og seiler ofte med turister i dette arktiske området. På en tur vil de to danske turistene dra til stedet for angrepet og klarer å overtale en motvillig Tuuma. Hans dårlige magefølelse blir dessverre en realitet og de to turistene forsvinner. Tuuma seiler raskt tilbake til Nuuk for å få hjelp fra politiet, som til å begynne med ikke tar han på alvor. Men er det lurt å gå tilbake og se etter turistene, når Qivittoqs er i fjellet? I denne filmen blir vi ikke utsatt for monstre, vampyrer eller zombier. The Edge of the Shadow utforsker et skummelt vesen fra inuittenes mytolog, hvis man forlot samfunnet av sjalusi, sinne eller skam og dro til fjells for å leve alene kunne man bli en qvittoq. Her er mytologien iscenesatt i et klassisk lavbudsjetts-skrekkfilmformat.

HORROR FILM FROM GREENLAND

For the first time, Greenland is in the competition for the Nordic Council's film prize. Now you have the unique chance to watch the Greenlandic film that has been nominated.

Here is the reason the Nordic Council has given for nominating this film:

"With his unique ability to build on Inuit stories and mythology, the director in Alanngut Killinganni (The Edge of the Shadows) combines modern storytelling techniques with humor and horror from the oral Greenlandic storytelling tradition. One of the film's central elements is therefore its use of Greenlandic stories and mythology, which are woven into the story in a natural and authentic way.

The Greenlandic landscapes are also included as a central element in the film, where breathtaking views of the mountains and the sea form a fantastic backdrop for the action. The beautiful landscapes enhance a sense of fear and unease and add an extra dimension to the exciting action.

The film explores important themes related to grief, community and tradition. It is seen in the clash between civilisations, city and country, and the natural and the mystical as well as in the respect for nature and history. There are things out there that we don't know about. The film places itself elegantly in the more recent tradition of "arctic chills" from the high north."

ABOUT THE MOVIE:

Eight years have passed since six young people were attacked by a Qivittoq (a Greenlandic legendary figure). Tuuma is a tourist guide in Greenland and often sails with tourists in this arctic area. On a trip, the two Danish tourists want to go to the site of the attack and manage to persuade a reluctant Tuuma. His bad feeling unfortunately becomes a reality and the two tourists disappear. Tuuma quickly sails back to Nuuk to get help from the police, who at first do not take him seriously. But is it a good idea to go back and look for the tourists, when the Qivittoqs are in the mountains? In this film we are not exposed to monsters, vampires or zombies. The Edge of the Shadow explores a scary being from Inuit mythology, if you left society out of jealousy, anger or shame and went to the mountains to live alone you could become a qvittoq. Here, the mythology is staged in a classic low-budget horror film format.

Under ARCTIC MOVING IMAGE & FILM FESTIVAL 2023 inviterer SASUSU Radio til utstillingen “Verdens ende” i et prosjektbasert kunstnerkollektiv bestående av Henrik Sørlid, Ellen Vikström, Mimii, Jette Graaner og Sanjey Sureshkumar.

Gruppen arbeider med et tempel som møteplass, et sted for helbredelse og mytologi. Med Verdens ende som en direkte tråd mellom tiden vi lever i og jordens undergang ønsker kunstnergruppen å skape dialog i Harstad. Med et program bestående av matlaging og te-drikking, radioprogrammer, musikk og performance sammen med gjester i og utenfor Harstad ønsker SASUSU Radio velkommen til livet på Verdens ende.

SASUSU Radio er en migrerende møteplass som har siden 2021 søkt etter forbindelser mellom det eelam-tamilske øylandskap og den tamilske diasporaen i Norge. I reinkarnasjonen av eelam-tamilsk kultur skapt ved møter med og mellom folk, stedsrelasjoner og migratoriske vekkelser presenteres eldre tradisjoner på nye tilfluktssteder, og nye tradisjoner på eldre tilholdssteder. Radioens uttrykk kanaliseres gjennom samarbeid og familiebånd som finner sted over tid og i ulike arbeider. Prosjektene er flyktige og grenseløse og formes i tilstedeværelsen, der menneskelig sameksistens fremhever hverdagen vår og vi som er en del av den. Mellom fysiske og felles holdepunkter forsøker radioen å slå røtter i de sammenhenger som finnes og som er forankret i samfunn, fortid og fremtid.

During ARCTIC MOVING IMAGE & FILM FESTIVAL 2023, SASUSU Radio invites to the exhibition "Verdens ende" (“The end of the world”). SASUSU Radio is a project-based artist collective consisting of Henrik Sørlid, Ellen Vikström, Mimii, Jette Graaner and Sanjey Sureshkumar.

The group works with a temple as a meeting place, a place for healing and mythology. With “The end of the world” as a direct thread between the time we live in and the end of the world, the artist group wants to create dialogue in Harstad. With a programme consisting of cooking and tea-drinking, radio programmes, music and performance, together with guests in and outside Harstad, SASUSU Radio welcomes you to life at The end of the world.

A little more about the artist collective SASUSU Radio:

SASUSU Radio is a migrant meeting place that has since 2021 searched for connections between the Eelam-Tamil island landscape and the Tamil diaspora in Norway. In the reincarnation of Eelam-Tamil culture created by encounters with and between peoples, place relations and migratory revivals, older traditions are presented in new refuges, and new traditions in older haunts. The radio's expression is channeled through collaboration and family ties that take place over time and in various works. The projects are fleeting and limitless and are shaped in the presence, where human coexistence highlights our everyday life and we who are part of it. Between physical and common points of reference, the radio tries to take root in the contexts that exist and are rooted in society, past and future.

Filmkunstskolen i Kabelvåg (FiK) viser I CAME HERE TO LEARN; et program bestående av kortfilmer, skissefilmer og skoleoppgaver som alle er skapt av filmskolens nåværende studenter. Programmet viser skolens filmspråklige mangfold, hvor både det tekniske, estetiske og narrative utforskes og utfordres. Programtittelen, I CAME HERE TO LEARN, er hentet fra et tidligere utkast fra én av filmene; en ydmyk kommentar til det landskapet filmen beveger seg i. Det er også et løfte. Det samme løftet finnes i hele programmet, hvor publikum vil oppleve skisser fremdeles i prosess så vel som ferdige verk. Med det får man et unikt innblikk i hvordan studentene på filmkunstskolen i Kabelvåg lærer om det bevegelige bildet – akkurat nå.

I CAME HERE TO LEARN

The Film Arts School in Kabelvåg (FiK) shows I CAME HERE TO LEARN; a programme consisting of short films, sketch films and school assignments, all created by the film school's current students. The programme shows the school's film language diversity, where both the technical, aesthetic and narrative aspects are explored and challenged. The program title, I CAME HERE TO LEARN, is taken from an earlier draft of one of the films; a humble comment on the landscape the film moves in. It is also a promise. The same promise is found throughout the programme, where the audience will experience sketches still in process as well as finished works. With it, you get a unique insight into how the students at the film art school in Kabelvåg are learning about the moving image - right now.

Tittelen er hentet fra en bok av billedkunstner, moteskaper og fotograf Benjamin Alexander Huseby fra 2015. Boken beskrives som «en tilfeldig samling av noen vidunderlige, nyttige planter, vanligvis regnet som ugress.» Nyttevekstenes historie blir i boken satt i sammenheng med menneske og sivilisasjon, jordbruk og migrasjon. Ved å sammenstille ugress og menneskeheten beskriver Huseby en følelse av å være mellom steder og en tilstand mellom bevegelse og forlatthet.

The title derives from a book by artist, fashion designer and photographer Benjamin Alexander Huseby from 2015. Described as an “occasionally arbitrary collection of photographs of some rather wonderful, useful plants, normally considered weeds,” the story of weeds is the story of man and civilisation, of agriculture and migration. Juxtaposing weeds and humanity, Huseby describes being between places and a present condition between velocity and abandonment.

Curator Kjetil Berge is behind this year’s theme, BEND IT, MAYBE. Here is the curator text:

"This year's festival title, BENDIT, MAYBE, is conceived as an open and solution-oriented call for deliberations on relational themes, with a focus on identity and affiliation.

These themes are constant topics in human interaction. In social media the stream of opinions flows on a large and persistent battlefield full of combative headlines with polarising and predictable arguments. Trolls and bots fight to publicise othering opinions with hateful headlines about people they don’t think belong. A bullying attitude meant to exclude people from the public debate as well as IRL.

BEND IT, MAYBE encourages a position of embrace, it shows the beginning of a curve, that can accommodate and change direction. It is humorous, invites reflection and deliberation and is an alternative to a default defensive stance. To envisage flexibility, afterthought, inclusion and open-mindedness as effective tools in relational power structures seems radical at this point.”

Årets tema for AMIFF er utarbeidet av Kjetil Berge. Her er hans kuratortekst:

«Årets festivaltittel, BEND IT, MAYBE, er tenkt som ei åpen og løysningsorientert oppfordring til betraktningar rundt relasjonelle tema, med fokus på identitet og tilhørighet.

Desse temaene er stadig på dagsorden. I sosiale medier flyt meiningsstraumen på ei stor og vedvarande slagmark full av stridbare overskrifter med polariserande og forutsigbar tenkning. Troll og robotar kjempar for å publisere meningar med hatefulle overskrifter om folk dei ikkje trur høyrer til. Det er ei haldning meint til å ekskludere folk fra den offentlige debatten så vel som IRL.

BEND IT, MAYBE oppfordrar til ei omfavning, og beskriv begynnelsen på ein boge, noko som kan vidast ut og endre retning. Overskrifta er humoristisk og inviterer til refleksjon, om- og ettertanke og er eit alternativ til ein standard forsvars posisjon. Å sjå for seg fleksibilitet, fundering, inkludering, empati og vidsyn som effektive verktøy i relasjonelle maktforhold synest radikalt på dette punktet.

In a suite at the hotel Clarion Arcticus Harstad, Suspended in Celluloid presents two works dealing with questions around ghostliness, social-psychological phenomena, and the affective impacts of technology. Beth von Undall’s Jailbreak Brenna 0.1 (2023) is a video game based on the game-theoretical premise ‘the prisoner’s dilemma’, featuring the underground Berlin-persona Brenna O. In the exhibition, viewers are invited to lay down on the hotel bed and decide on whether they want to conspire with or betray this alluring figure. On the grand room’s other screen, Sue de Beer’s The Ghosts (2011) similarly includes figures from the artists’ own circle: in this film painter Jutta Koether appears in the role of a hypnotist, whose powers lead distressed clients into dream-like states of confusion and hallucination. Within the walls of the hotel room’s decades-old interiors, the longing and desire emanating from both works seems to be suspended in the air.
