THE NEW MUSEUM (110 min, 2025) explores the making of the new National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, Norway. The filmmaker Birgitte Sigmundstad presents the film herself.
Through observational footage, filmed over a period of 8 years Birgitte Sigmundstad takes us into the meeting rooms and onto the construction site. We meet the people working with the art, see works and objects being prepared for relocation, and witness the old museum buildings that have now become history. Without rushing, the film brings us into discussions and planning processes, and we follow the architect’s ups and downs. The New Museum offers insight into the process and expectations behind the construction of the museum, resulting in an intimate and often entertaining film that raises questions about what a museum should contain – and who it is built for.
