Present Tense Film

A live-edited and site-sensitive film created for Harstad Kino, by artist Joen Vedel.

The film consists of material shot in the Hárstták region prior to the festival, mixed with archival images from Sör-Troms Museum’s collection and narrated live by local Sámi storytellers facilitated by Várdobáiki Sami Centre. Rather than trying to represent a coherent or linear history, Present Tense Film takes place within many different and overlapping temporalities. It is a film that does not want to conclude anything, but rather aims to enter the construction of history and take note of what it continues to leave behind, suppress and ignore. It is a film about a place flooded with times, memories, stories and images seen and unseen; an active encounter in which both the film and its spectator are in a state of becoming.

Artist Joen Vedel has been invited by the chief curator of AMIFF 2025 Kjetil Berge to create this year's commissioned work for the festival.

Hear Joen Vedel in conversation with Johan Grimonprez, moderated by professor in art Knut Åsdam, Sunday 23 November in the event Johan Grimonprez: Shorts.

Present Tense Film will be in norwegian, and the artist talk 23 November will be in English.
